The Ugly Side of the Wedding Industry ~ #5 Warning: Beware if the false discount

This practice is actually illegal but who’s counting? The best way to explain this is by demonstration.

  • The cost of the gown from the manufacturer paid by the bridal store: $500.00
  • Suggested Retail Price: $800.00
  • Dress Value: $800.00
  • Actual Retail Price charged by bridal store: $900.00 with 10% discount
  • What you pay: $810.00

So you paid $10.00 over the Suggested Retail Price and you think you just benefited from a discount from heaven. Unfortunately, besides knowing the suggested retail value for your dress which can prove difficult if you do not know the manufacturer of the gown, there is not much of a way to avoid this. If you are told that there is a discount on the gown you are purchasing, ask the retailer why the discount is being offered. You should make this a practice anyway because you want to make sure there are no damages to the product or something else that may defer you from purchasing.
